FIA Foundation spotlights active mobility and road safety at WUF12

The FIA Foundation joined partners at the Cairo World Urban Forum (WUF12) focusing on active mobility and road safety for climate action and sustainable urban development with a number of major events and launches.

The conference brought together 25,000 participants in person and online, including governments, academia, civil society, and more, working towards better and healthier settlements and liveable cities.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the Pan African Action Plan for Active Mobility (PAAPAM), which was developed by WHO and UN Habitat and supported by the FIA Foundation. The Plan offers a transport blueprint for Africa’s mobility future, in consultation with more than 1,300 African stakeholders at national, regional and local levels, focusing on the health and safety of the millions who walk and cycle in Africa every day.

The Forum had a particular lens on child health and safety with a number of Foundation partner events and launches. The Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) launched two new publications for cities and planners to use - 'How to evaluate streets near schools' and 'How to engage kids in street design', supported by the FIA Foundation. The Cities4 Children (C4C) Alliance hosted a Youth Knowledge Hub – a guided tour of resources for child-focused urban design – showcasing two FIA Foundation-funded reports: AIP Foundation’s Safe School Zone Guide for Vietnam and the PATH Active Travel NDC Template. The FIA Foundation also joined the C4C event 'It Starts with Children - Local Actions for Inclusive Urban Futures' where Director of Child and Youth Health, Atsani Ariobowo, showcased the Start with Children Summit advancing the urban sustainable mobility agenda for children.

The FIA Foundation hosted an informal networking reception convening partners from the Child Health Initiative, PATH, and the Cities4Children Alliance to connect and exchange on their work and find synergies and opportunities for collaboration.

FIA Foundation Director of Child and Youth Health, Atsani Ariobowo, spoke at a range of events including the Partnership for Active Travel and Health (PATH) and European Cyclists’ Federation session on ways to unlock active mobility’s full potential for climate, health, and liveable cities; ‘Working in partnership to improve health and wellbeing in urban settings’ an event with UN Habitat, UN NCD Taskforce and the UN Health4Life Fund,  emphasising the importance of impactful partnerships and multisectoral collaboration; and the ITDP event 'A Win for Climate and Health - Mainstreaming Road Safety in Sustainable Transport Projects’ focusing on investments in public transport and active mobility for road safety benefits.
