FIA Foundation AGM highlights 2023 activities
The FIA Foundation held its Annual General Meeting during the FIA AGM in Baku, Azerbaijan, to report on its 2023 work in road and motor sport safety, climate, environment and adolescent health.
The meeting gave a standing ovation to the outgoing Chairman, Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, recognising his commitment to global road safety as he concluded his third and final term. George Robertson had been Chair for eight years, and previously chaired the Foundation’s Commission for Global Road Safety for nine years. David Richards CBE, currently Chairman of Motorsport UK, was appointed as the new Chair.
Club activities on child road safety were presented by speakers from Azerbaijan, Botswana, and Colombia. The Foundation has worked closely with the FIA and member clubs to foster a community of practice on Star Rating for Schools, a design assessment tool, and on advocacy for safer streets for children. This is an important element of the Foundation’s Child Health Initiative. Activities by clubs from Mozambique and Ivory Coast were also highlighted alongside some significant achievements by other partners. In Vietnam AIP Foundation has succeeded in working with the government to adopt Safe School Guidance recommending maximum 30km/h speed limits near schools. In Africa Amend is advising on infrastructure safety for hundreds of schools along World Bank-supported projects through its Safe Schools Africa programme.
FIA speakers highlighted work on motor sport safety, online abuse in sport, growing female participation, and the FIA Road Safety Index, which is encouraging companies to measure and improve their road safety footprint. Other presentations included work on Safe Helmets and the Delft Road Safety training for Region II clubs.
Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the IFRC, stepped down as a trustee and two new trustees, Elizabeth Perry AM and Andrea Oliver Venere, were appointed to the Board. The meeting held a minute silence to remember and honour Zoleka Mandela, the Foundation’s Child Health Ambassador, who passed away in September.
